Why choose us

Benefits of Extraction

Relief From Problem Teeth

Removing a tooth that is badly damaged, infected, or crowding others can ease discomfort and protect nearby teeth.

Simple or Surgical

A simple extraction removes a fully visible tooth, while a surgical extraction is for teeth that are broken at the gumline or harder to reach.

Same Dentist Throughout

You see Dr. Buitrago at every visit, from your exam to your follow-up.

Planning What Comes Next

As a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth, Dr. Buitrago can plan your tooth replacement before the tooth comes out.

Comfort and Payment Options

Oral sedation is available, and we accept major PPO plans, self-pay, CareCredit, and major credit cards.

An extraction is the removal of a tooth that can no longer be kept healthy, and we provide it for teens, adults, and seniors at our Coral Springs office. A common example: a back tooth has cracked below the gumline, or a cavity has gone too deep for a filling or crown to save it, and the tooth keeps aching. When we determine that keeping the tooth would cause more trouble than removing it, a careful extraction lets the area heal and opens the door to a planned replacement.

We offer two kinds of extraction, and the right one depends on how the tooth sits in your mouth. A simple extraction is for a tooth that is fully visible above the gums and can be loosened and lifted out with standard instruments. Many teeth that are badly decayed, loose from gum disease, or damaged beyond repair but still intact above the gumline fall into this group.

A surgical extraction is for a tooth that is harder to reach. That includes teeth broken off at or below the gumline, teeth with curved or unusual roots, and teeth that have not fully come in. In these cases a small opening in the gum, and sometimes sectioning the tooth into pieces, allows it to come out with more control. Both kinds are performed in our office by Dr. Renan Buitrago, DDS, so you see the same doctor from your first exam through your follow-up.

Extraction is a decision we make with you after an exam, not a default. We look first at whether a filling, crown, or root canal could keep the tooth working. When those options are not realistic, or when a tooth is threatening the health of the teeth around it, removal is often the most sensible next step.

Dr. Buitrago is a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth. That training shapes how we approach an extraction. Before a tooth comes out, we talk about what will fill the space, whether that is a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial or complete denture. In some cases, bone grafting at the time of extraction helps preserve the site for a future implant. Planning ahead keeps your options open instead of leaving a gap to deal with later.

Will I be comfortable during the extraction?

Yes, we numb the area thoroughly before we begin, and we check that it is fully numb before starting. You may feel pressure as the tooth is loosened, but the goal is that you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure.

For patients who feel anxious about dental work, we offer oral sedation, a medication taken by mouth before your visit to help you relax. If you are interested, tell us during your consultation so we can review your health history and explain how to prepare, including arranging a ride home.

How should I care for the area afterward?

You should protect the blood clot that forms in the socket, because it is the foundation for healing. We give you written instructions before you leave, and following them closely makes a real difference in how smoothly your recovery goes.

In the first days, most patients find these steps helpful:

  • Bite gently on gauze as directed to control bleeding
  • Avoid drinking through a straw, spitting forcefully, or smoking
  • Choose soft, cool foods and chew on the opposite side
  • Keep your head slightly raised when resting
  • Rinse gently only when and how we advise
  • Take any recommended medication exactly as instructed

Some swelling and tenderness are normal after an extraction, and surgical extractions usually call for a little more recovery time than simple ones. If you notice pain that gets worse instead of better, bleeding that will not slow down, or anything that worries you, call our office. We offer emergency dental appointments and would rather see you than have you wait.

How do I pay for an extraction?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file the claim for you, and we also welcome self-pay patients. Coverage for extractions varies from plan to plan, so our front office can review your benefits and explain your expected portion before treatment.

If you prefer to spread out the cost, we offer CareCredit, 0% and low-interest financing options, and all major credit cards. This can be especially helpful when an extraction is the first step in a larger plan, such as removing a tooth and later placing an implant or a bridge.

When should I schedule a visit?

You should call us as soon as a tooth is causing pain, feels loose, or has broken. Acting early often gives us more choices, and sometimes it means a tooth can be saved after all.

Our office is at 2232 N University Drive, Suite B, in Coral Springs, and we see patients from Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, Tamarac, Coral Springs, and nearby communities. Call us to schedule an exam. We will look closely at the tooth, explain whether a simple or surgical extraction makes sense, and talk through how to replace it so you leave with a clear plan.
