Problems Caught Early

A careful exam helps us find decay, gum disease and worn or broken restorations while they are easier to treat.

Specialist Eye on Restorations

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Buitrago looks closely at your crowns, bridges, partials and dentures to see how they fit and function.

Clear Plan, No Pressure

We explain what we see in plain language and talk through your options before anything is scheduled.

Care Under One Roof

If you need treatment, Dr. Buitrago plans and restores it here in our Coral Springs office instead of sending you elsewhere.

A dental exam is a careful check of your teeth, gums, bite and any existing dental work, and it is for teens, adults and seniors who are due for a checkup or have noticed something that feels different. Maybe a crown feels rough along the edge, a partial no longer sits the way it used to, or your gums have started to bleed when you brush. At Advanced Dentistry of Coral Springs, Dr. Renan Buitrago looks at all of it and explains what he finds in plain terms.

Your first exam with us starts with a conversation. We ask about your health history, any medications you take, and what has been bothering you, if anything. Some patients come in simply because it has been a while. Others come in with a specific concern, such as sensitivity on one side or a denture that rubs. Both are good reasons to schedule, and both get the same unhurried attention.

Dr. Buitrago then examines your teeth, gums and bite, along with any fillings, crowns, bridges, partials or dentures you already have. He is a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth. That background is useful in a routine exam, because so many adults and seniors already have dental work that needs to be checked for wear, fit and function. You also see the same doctor at every visit, so the person reviewing your mouth next year is the person who examined it this year.

An exam is often paired with a dental cleaning by our hygienist, so your teeth are cleaned and evaluated in the same visit. The exam focuses on what Dr. Buitrago sees and what it means. The cleaning focuses on removing buildup and keeping your gums healthy.

If you have not been to a dentist in some time, it helps to arrive with a few notes. Patients often find it useful to mention:

  • Any tooth that feels sensitive to hot, cold or biting pressure
  • Gums that bleed, feel tender or look puffy
  • Crowns, bridges, partials or dentures that feel loose, chipped or uncomfortable
  • Changes in how your teeth come together when you bite

These details help Dr. Buitrago focus on what matters most to you.

What happens if the exam finds a problem?

If something needs attention, Dr. Buitrago explains what he sees, why it matters, and what your options are before anything is scheduled. Nothing is done without your understanding and agreement.

Because our office provides comprehensive care, most follow-up treatment can happen right here. That includes fillings, crowns, bridges, root canal therapy, gum disease treatment such as scaling and root planing, extractions, and complete or partial dentures. If you are missing teeth, Dr. Buitrago can also talk with you about tooth replacement options, including dental implants. We have an on-site dental lab, and complex cases are planned and restored in-house rather than sent elsewhere. For patients who feel anxious about treatment, we offer oral sedation.

How often should I have a dental exam?

Most patients come in for regular checkups, and Dr. Buitrago will recommend a schedule that fits your mouth. Someone with healthy gums and few restorations may follow a different routine than someone managing gum disease or wearing a partial.

Patients who have had gum disease treatment may be placed on periodontal maintenance, which keeps closer watch on the gums between visits. Patients with crowns, bridges or dentures benefit from regular checks on how that work is holding up. If something comes up between visits, such as a broken tooth or sudden pain, we offer emergency dental appointments.

What should I do after my exam?

After a routine exam, you can go about your day as usual. Keep brushing and flossing, and follow any specific suggestions Dr. Buitrago or our hygienist gave you, such as paying extra attention to a certain area or cleaning around a bridge or partial in a particular way.

If treatment was recommended, our front office will help you schedule it. Should anything change before that appointment, like new sensitivity or swelling, call us so we can take a look sooner.

Does insurance cover a dental exam?

Many patients use insurance for their exams, and we accept all major PPO insurance plans. Our team will help you understand how your plan applies before or during your visit.

We also welcome self-pay patients. For any treatment that follows your exam, we offer financing through CareCredit, 0% and low-interest financing options, and we accept all major credit cards. Our goal is to make the cost clear so you can make decisions with confidence.
