Why choose us

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Calm From the Start

Oral sedation is a prescribed pill taken before your visit to help you feel relaxed in the chair.

No Needles for Sedation

Because oral sedation is taken by mouth, no IV is used to help you relax.

More Done Per Visit

When you are relaxed, Dr. Buitrago can often complete more of your treatment in one appointment.

One Familiar Dentist

You see Dr. Buitrago at every visit, so the person who plans your care is the same one who provides it.

Easier Return to Care

Oral sedation can help patients who have put off dental visits come back for the treatment they need.

If your heart races at the thought of a dental chair, sedation dentistry can help you get the care you need while feeling calmer and more at ease. At Advanced Dentistry of Coral Springs, we offer oral sedation for teens and adults who feel anxious about treatment, need longer visits, or have put off care because of fear. Dr. Renan Buitrago sees every patient himself, so the same dentist who plans your sedation is the one who treats you.

Oral sedation uses prescribed medication, taken by mouth, to help you relax during your appointment. It does not put you to sleep the way general anesthesia does. Most patients stay awake and able to respond, yet feel drowsy and noticeably less worried. Many remember little of the visit afterward. Because there are no needles involved in the sedation itself, it is a comfortable starting point for people who dislike shots or IVs.

We offer only the oral option in our office. There is no anesthesiologist on staff, and we do not provide IV sedation or general anesthesia. For many people, oral sedation is enough to make a cleaning, a filling, or a longer restorative visit feel manageable. Local numbing is still used for procedures that need it. The sedation helps with the anxiety, and the numbing helps with the area being treated.

Oral sedation helps a wide range of patients, not only those with severe fear. Some have had a difficult experience in the past. Others have a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or trouble sitting still for long periods. It can also be useful when several treatments are combined into one visit, such as crowns, root canal therapy, or extractions.

Patients often consider oral sedation when they:

  • Have delayed cleanings or exams for years because of anxiety
  • Need longer restorative work, such as multiple crowns or bridges
  • Are scheduled for a surgical extraction or bone grafting
  • Find the sounds, smells, or sensations of dental care overwhelming

For seniors restoring worn or missing teeth with dentures, partials, or implants, sedation can make extended appointments easier to complete. Dr. Buitrago is a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth, so complex care is planned and completed here rather than referred out.

Am I a good candidate for oral sedation?

Many healthy teens and adults are good candidates, and the only way to know for sure is a conversation with Dr. Buitrago. At your first visit, we review your medical history, current medications, and any past reactions to sedatives. Be open about health conditions, supplements, and alcohol use, since these can affect how sedation works for you.

Planning matters. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment, because the medication affects alertness and coordination. We give you clear instructions about timing, eating, and drinking before your visit. If oral sedation is not the right fit, Dr. Buitrago will talk through other ways to keep you comfortable.

What should I expect after my sedation appointment?

Plan to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Drowsiness can linger for several hours, so avoid driving, operating machinery, or making important decisions until the effects have fully worn off. Having someone stay with you for a while is a good idea.

Aftercare also depends on the treatment you received. A filling, a crown, or an extraction each has its own instructions, and we send you home with guidance written for your specific procedure. If anything feels unusual or you have questions, call our office. For many patients, the biggest result is simply that the care they had been putting off is finally done, and the next visit feels less daunting.

How can I pay for sedation dentistry?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. Coverage for sedation varies from plan to plan, so our front office team can help you understand your benefits before treatment begins.

For costs not covered by insurance, we offer CareCredit, 0% and low-interest financing options, and all major credit cards. We review your treatment plan and estimated costs with you ahead of time, so there are no surprises on the day of your visit.

If fear has kept you away from the dentist, you are not alone, and you do not have to face it without support. Our office at 2232 N University Drive, Suite B, in Coral Springs welcomes patients from Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, Tamarac, and nearby communities.
