Teeth whitening lightens stains on natural teeth, and it suits adults whose enamel has darkened from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco or simply years of use. At Advanced Dentistry of Coral Springs, we offer two approaches: in-office whitening completed during a visit, and take-home whitening you use on your own schedule. Both start with an exam, so the shade you end up with fits your teeth, your gums and any dental work you already have.

In-office whitening is done in our chair at 2232 N University Drive. We protect your gums and lips, apply a professional whitening gel to the front surfaces of your teeth, and monitor the process throughout the appointment. It works well for patients who want a noticeable change in a single visit. It also helps those who would rather not manage a daily routine at home.

Take-home whitening uses trays and a whitening gel that you wear for set periods at home. Because our office has an on-site dental lab, we can coordinate the trays here rather than sending the work elsewhere. The take-home option fits patients who prefer to lighten gradually, want more control over the pace, or plan to touch up their shade later. Some patients combine the two, starting in the office and maintaining at home.

Patients come to us for whitening for different reasons, and the reason often shapes which option makes sense. Common situations include:

  • Gradual yellowing from daily coffee or tea
  • An upcoming wedding, reunion or work event with a clear date
  • Planning new crowns, veneers or bonding and wanting the surrounding teeth lighter first
  • Uneven color between natural teeth and existing dental work

That third situation matters more than many people expect. Whitening gel acts on natural enamel. It does not change the color of crowns, veneers, bonding or fillings. If you are considering new restorations, we usually suggest whitening first. Your new work can then be matched to the brighter shade. Because restorations are a central part of our practice, we plan the order of treatment with you from the start.

Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates, but we confirm that with an exam first. Cavities, gum disease or worn enamel should be addressed before whitening. Whitening gel on irritated gums or decayed teeth can cause discomfort, and the results may be uneven. If you are due, we can pair whitening with a dental cleaning, which removes surface buildup so the gel reaches the enamel evenly.

Some stains respond better than others. Yellowish discoloration from food and drink tends to lighten well. Grayish tones or discoloration from inside the tooth may respond less, and in those cases we may talk with you about other cosmetic options we offer, such as composite bonding or porcelain veneers. You will see the same dentist, Dr. Renan Buitrago, at every visit, so the person evaluating your teeth is the same person following your results.

What should I do after whitening, and how long do results last?

For the first day or two, go easy on coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces and tobacco, since teeth can pick up stains more readily right after treatment. Some patients notice temporary sensitivity to cold. We will give you specific instructions based on the option you chose and how your teeth responded.

How long results last depends largely on your habits. Regular coffee drinkers and smokers will usually see color return sooner than people who avoid those stains. Brushing, flossing and keeping up with routine cleanings all help. Whitening is not a one-time, lasting change. Many patients keep their take-home trays and use them occasionally for touch-ups, which is one reason the take-home option appeals to people who want to maintain their shade over time.

How can I pay for teeth whitening?

We will review your costs and any coverage with you before we begin, so there are no surprises. Whitening is a cosmetic treatment. We accept all major PPO insurance plans for exams and cleanings, and we welcome self-pay patients.

For whitening itself, we offer several ways to pay. We accept all major credit cards and CareCredit, and 0% and low-interest financing options are available for qualified patients. If you are combining whitening with other cosmetic or restorative work, we can walk you through how the pieces fit together financially as well as clinically.

How do I get started?

Start by scheduling an exam with us. We will look at your teeth and gums and talk through what is causing your stains. We will also review any existing dental work and recommend in-office whitening, take-home whitening or a combination. Patients visit our Coral Springs office from Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, Tamarac and nearby communities. Call our office to book your visit, and we will help you choose the approach that fits your teeth and your schedule.
