Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of dental ceramic bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They are for adults who want to change the color, shape, size, or alignment of teeth that show when they smile. A chipped front tooth, a gap between two incisors, or teeth that stay dull after whitening are all common reasons patients ask us about them. At Advanced Dentistry of Coral Springs, every veneer case is planned and placed by Dr. Renan Buitrago, DDS. You see the same doctor at every visit, from your first consultation to your final checkup.
Porcelain veneers cover the visible front of a tooth, much like a natural layer of enamel. Porcelain can be shaded and shaped to reflect light the way natural teeth do. A veneer can lengthen a worn edge, close a small space, even out a crooked-looking tooth, or brighten a tooth with stains that whitening cannot reach. Some patients need one or two veneers to match a single tooth to its neighbors. Others choose a full set across the front of the smile as part of a broader smile makeover.
To make room for the porcelain, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of each tooth. This is why we treat veneers as a long-term decision. The tooth will need a veneer or another restoration from then on. We explain this clearly before any treatment begins, so you can decide with all the facts in front of you.
Dr. Buitrago is a prosthodontist, a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth. He earned dental degrees from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 2000 and New York University in 2008. He completed NYU's advanced program in prosthodontics, then finished a three-year prosthodontics residency at New York Hospital Queens, affiliated with Cornell. He is a recipient of the Gersten Award and has owned this practice since 2014.
That training matters for veneers because they are about proportion, bite, and how each tooth works with the rest of the mouth. Our office has an on-site dental lab and offers cosmetic smile-design consultations. This lets us plan shade and shape carefully and coordinate closely with the people crafting your veneers.
Am I a good candidate for porcelain veneers?
Good candidates generally have healthy teeth and gums and want to improve how their front teeth look. Before we recommend veneers, Dr. Buitrago performs a dental exam and checks for decay, gum disease, and signs of heavy grinding. If any of these are present, we address them first through treatments such as fillings, gum disease treatment, or scaling and root planing.
Veneers are not always the right answer. Mild staining may respond well to in-office or take-home teeth whitening. A small chip may be repaired with composite bonding. Teeth that are significantly misaligned may be better served by Invisalign. A tooth that is heavily damaged or has had a root canal may need a crown instead. Because we offer all of these treatments under one roof, we can recommend the option that fits your teeth rather than steering you toward one procedure.
How do I care for veneers, and how long do they look good?
Porcelain veneers need the same daily care as natural teeth, plus a few sensible habits to protect them. Porcelain resists staining, but the teeth and gums underneath still need attention. The edges where a veneer meets the tooth must stay clean to keep decay and gum problems away.
- Brush twice a day and floss daily, paying attention to the gumline.
- Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens, or fingernails.
- Let us know if you clench or grind your teeth.
- Keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams with our hygienist and Dr. Buitrago.
How long veneers last depends on your oral health, your bite, and your habits. At each visit we check the fit and condition of your veneers, so we can address small issues early.
How can I pay for porcelain veneers?
We accept all major PPO insurance plans, self-pay patients, and all major credit cards. We also offer financing through CareCredit, including 0% and low-interest options. Coverage for cosmetic treatment varies by plan, so our front office will review your benefits and explain what to expect before you commit.
When veneers are part of a larger plan that includes restorative work, some portions may be handled differently by your insurance than others. We walk you through each part of the plan so the financial side is as clear as the clinical side.
