You see Dr. Buitrago at every appointment, from planning to final placement.

Flexible Ways to Pay

We accept major PPO plans, self-pay, CareCredit, 0% and low-interest financing, and major credit cards.

A tooth that has cracked, broken around an old filling, or worn down from years of grinding often needs more support than a filling can give. A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the entire visible part of a weakened tooth, and it is for teens, adults, and seniors who want to keep a natural tooth working and looking right. At Advanced Dentistry of Coral Springs, Dr. Renan Buitrago plans and places every crown himself, so you see the same doctor from your first exam to your final fitting.

A crown restores a tooth's shape, strength, and appearance by covering it on all sides. Think of a filling as a patch inside a tooth. A crown is more like a helmet over it. When a large portion of the tooth is missing or fragile, a filling alone may not hold up to daily chewing, while a crown can spread the biting pressure across the whole tooth.

Patients come to us for crowns for many different reasons. Some have a back molar with a crack that hurts when they bite down. Some have a front tooth that is chipped or discolored and want it to blend in again. Others have a tooth that was treated with root canal therapy, which can leave it more brittle over time. Crowns also play a role in replacing missing teeth, since a bridge uses crowns on the neighboring teeth, and a dental implant is finished with a crown on top.

Dr. Buitrago is a prosthodontist, which means a dentist with three additional years of specialty training in replacing and restoring teeth. He earned dental degrees from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 2000 and New York University in 2008, completed NYU's advanced program in prosthodontics, and finished a three-year prosthodontics residency at New York Hospital Queens, affiliated with Cornell. He is a recipient of the Gersten Award and has owned this Coral Springs practice since 2014.

That training shapes how we approach a single crown. We look at how your bite comes together, how the crown will sit next to your other teeth, and whether the tooth underneath is healthy enough to support it. We also have an on-site dental lab, which lets us stay closely involved in how your crown is made and fitted. If your case is more involved, Dr. Buitrago plans and restores it here in our office rather than sending you elsewhere.

Am I a good candidate for a crown?

You may be a good candidate if a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, badly worn, or has had a root canal. The best way to know is an exam, where Dr. Buitrago checks the tooth, the surrounding gums, and your bite before recommending anything.

Healthy gums matter, because a crown needs a stable foundation. If we find signs of gum disease, we may suggest treatment such as scaling and root planing first. If the tooth has an infection in its nerve, root canal therapy may come before the crown. In some cases, a tooth is too damaged to save, and we will talk through replacement options with you, such as a bridge or an implant. If a tooth breaks suddenly, we offer emergency dental appointments so you can be seen promptly.

How do I care for a crown, and what results can I expect?

You care for a crowned tooth much like your natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep your regular cleanings and exams. The crown itself does not decay, but the tooth underneath can, especially where the crown meets the gumline.

A few habits help protect your crown:

  • Floss gently around the edge of the crown each day
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or pens
  • Ask us about a night guard if you clench or grind
  • Keep up with visits to our dental hygienist

A well-fitted crown should feel like a normal part of your bite and blend with your other teeth. How long it lasts depends on your habits, your bite, and your overall oral health, which is why we follow up at your routine visits.

How can I pay for my crown?

We accept all major PPO insurance plans and file claims for you, so you can focus on your treatment. Many plans cover part of the cost of a crown, and our front office can help you review your benefits before you begin.

We also welcome self-pay patients. For those who prefer to spread out payments, we offer CareCredit, 0% and low-interest financing options, and we accept all major credit cards. If you feel nervous about dental visits, oral sedation is also available, and we are glad to discuss it at your consultation.

If a tooth has been bothering you, or you have been told you might need a crown, we would be glad to take a look. Patients visit us from Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek, Margate, Tamarac, and nearby communities. Call our office at 2232 N University Drive, Suite B, to schedule your exam with Dr. Buitrago.
